Cutting Out Soda Curbs Children’s Weight Gain, Studies Show

Researchers provide the strongest evidence yet that soda and other sugary drinks contribute to the obesity epidemic in children.

But the new research suggests that limiting children’s access to sugary beverages can indeed curb weight gain: one paper found that providing children with water or diet soda as an alternative to full-sugar soft drinks can lead to meaningful drops in children’s fat deposits and weight; another showed that drinking a single no-calorie drink a day, instead of a sugary one, slows weight gain, independent of other behaviors like overeating or failing to exercise. A third study finds that for people who are already genetically predisposed to obesity, drinking sugary sodas can make their weight problem worse.

You’ve probably been to a party where one of the appetizers was veggies and dip. We’re all busy, and to make life easier, grocery stores often sell these vegetables precut and washed, in a plastic tray. This tray is great for snacking. But it’s also the perfect tool for a little counting practice!

What You Need:

  • Sectioned veggie tray, or any tray with multiple sections (and ideally a center section, too)
  • 20 pennies, erasers, plastic rings, or other small items
  • Small Post-It notes, or scrap paper and tape

First Step to Reading...Learning the ABC's

Here is a fun way to teach the alphabet.  Make your own dice by recycling a small Priority Mail box or other small cardboard box. Cover the box with wrapping paper or bulletin board paper. Print out the dice printables, cut them out, and glue them onto the sides of the box.
