Environmental Print - Helping Your Child Begin to read Words They Know

Can your child read words like "Stop", "McDonald's", "Sesame Street", "Cheerios", and "Dora"? Words that are all around your child in their environment are called environmental print.
Encourage your child to read the words around them.  When you are out at a store or around town, have your child identify and read words that they know.

As an additional activity, have your child cut out words from local coupons or ads that they can read. Your child can glue them into a book called "I Can Read."  Glue a word onto each page with the sentence "I can read." Your child can practice reading the sentence and the environmental print word.  You can substitute your child's name for the word "I" (example: Allison can read).
